Selecting Children’s Fiction Books for a Seed Collection in a Public Library in Kodiak City, Alaska

Library User Needs Assessment
Kodiak City, zip code 99615 was selected for conducting a needs assessment of a library’s user community. Based on the 2013 statistics obtained from the website Factfinder2.census.gov (2014), there are 1,820 families with related children under 18 at 12.0% below poverty level, 1,146 married-couple families with related children under 18 at 4.4% below poverty level and 355 female householders (with no husband) with related children under 18 at 36.3% below poverty level (Poverty Status in Past 12 Months of Families, 2014). The BiggestUSCities.com website (2014) ranks Kodiak at #1 for city with the highest percentage of people below the poverty rate in Alaska and the percentage of people below the poverty rate in Kodiak at 14.6% followed by Meadow Lakes at 13.2%, Ketchikan at 12.9% and the majority of residents younger than 18 at 27.0% (2014).

Google lists Kodiak City as being approximately 4.672 square miles and based on the fact that there is only one public library and a high percentage of minors under 18, the library user needs assessment for this report determines the need to develop a seed collection in the area of Children’s Fiction. The idea is to establish a seed collection for the possibility of a future branch of the Kodiak Public Library (Google web search, 2014).

A fun and educational website that helps kids develop early reading and language skills through games.

This concludes the Children's public library seed collection; list of resources.

[The following includes budget and costs]

Collection Development Policy Considerations

The selection process of library materials should factor in its library policy but for this assignment two policy statements for collections from “the Culturally Responsive Guidelines for Alaska Public Libraries developed by the Alaska Library Association and library directors were taken into account for selecting sources as follows:

“A culturally responsive library purchases and maintains   collections that are sensitive to and accurately reflect Native cultures” and “a culturally responsive library reviews its collections regularly to insure that existing materials are relevant and appropriate” (Alaska Library Association, 2014).

This policy helps public librarians “respond to the specific informational, educational and cultural needs of their Alaska Native users and communities” (Akla.org, 2014).

Selection Plan

The Children’s Fiction Collection is built on a budget of $2,500 with each of the seven fiction genres receiving $357. The selection tools used to read reviews are from the library sources: Kirkus ReviewsBooklist, Hornbook and the websites Association for Library Service to Children and Children’s Literature Assembly. Based on this criterion the seed collection includes current and some classic Picture Books, popular Easy Readers, Easy Fiction, Juvenile Fiction, Youth Fiction, Fantasy, and Youth Graphic Novels. The fiction genre may be further divided by contemporary fiction and historical fiction. In Core Collections for Small Libraries by Janice A. DeLong and Rachel E. Schwedt (1997), “true historical fiction is the time period at the core of the story and the characters portrayed are caught up in the events of the time” although not actual persons. Contemporary fiction helps young readers “transition from childhood to adulthood by writing about situations that shadow the lives of young people” (DeLong and Schwedt, 1997). These two fiction divisions should also help in selecting materials for the specific age groups.

The grade levels indicated in the selections are based on Barr and Gillespie’s subject/grade level index codes found in Best Books for Children Preschool Through Grade 6 (2010). These are listed as
“P (Primary) preschool through grade 3; PI (Primary Intermediate) grades 2 through 4; I (Intermediate) grades 4 through 6; IJ (Intermediate Junior High) grades 5 through 8; All (All readers) preschool through grade 8 or higher” (Barr & Gillespie, 2010).

Children’s Online Database Collections

The following selection is six online database programs, selected to benefit the Children’s Department. Try-It! Illinois was used to help review four of the resources, although Brainfuse and CultureGrams were reviewed using the Chicago Public Library Database selections for children.

Brainfuse: Children and teens (Elementary to College prep) could receive online homework help daily from 2:00p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Also available are the prep tools for ACT/SAT, GED and US citizen test [Help with Spanish homework and English language lessons].

CultureGrams: Children and teens learn about different countries and their customs, social conditions, well-known citizens, [and recipes]. The database covers 78 countries and includes a USA Edition that covers the 50 states. Includes pictures for some materials.

Kids InfoBits: Young children in kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to explore and research the visually graphic interface. Subjects are selected using the subject-based topic tree that helps to narrow down a research topic. Current information from reference books and magazines covering a range of information: geography, the arts, science, current events, health, people, history, government, sports plus more (Gale-Cengage Learning).

The site is nicely designed for young children using two color identifiers and the layout is simple and easy to navigate. The search window is big and in the center of the page [an advanced search option to the right]. Children can click on the large photographs of other children representing the subject links.

StarWalk Kids Media-Student view: Children can search and select from over five hundred children’s eBooks. An easy search by title, author, illustrator and subject allows kids to browse easily. By annual subscription, unlimited simultaneous access allowed (StarWalk Kids Media). [To investigate the database itself, log-in was required and not to my success].

National Geographic Kids: Children ages 6-14 can explore the world of adventures in science, nature, archaeology, and space from a reputable source (Gale-Cengage Learning).

Kids can browse books or magazines and explore topics with easy to use links, tabs and a large easy to find search window. Magazines range by subject from animals to Nintendo Co. Some of the book subjects are: Animal Behavior, Excavations (Archaeology), National Parks, American Revolution, 1775-1783, Civil Rights, Atlases, and Earthquakes [the list goes on].

WorldandiKids: A public library resource that includes three databases geared towards elementary and middle school students (The World and I Online).

An easy to use web browser with links to the main sections by subject or concept such as: Folktales, Cyber Exhibits, Treasures, Create your Company, History Makers, Inspire!, Did you know?, and What If? The database also includes short videos showcasing monuments: The Colosseum, Machu Picchu and Petra. The “Create your Company” explains how the following different types of companies function: online co., software co., toy co., auto and airlines, bakeries, banks, dept. stores, and discount wholesalers to list a few.

Children’s Websites
The following six children’s websites were selected based on the following criteria: ease of use [simplicity], fun factor, variety of subject matter, teaching methods [games, puzzles, interactive], creativity, and free.
National Gallery of Art:

http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/education/kids.html

This is an interactive children’s website produced by the National gallery of Art which allow Children to play and explore the world of art and art history. Kids can use a wide array of interactive artist’s tools available in the website to doodle, create, and play with the online activities [good for all ages](NGA, 2014). Clicking on banners and buttons will bring up each program. [The Art Zone programs require a Mac or PC, and not for mobile devices](NGA).

According to NGA (2014): In Holland during the 17th and 18th centuries, the "poppenhuis" was an adult diversion, but our online DOLLHOUSE is fun for kids of all ages.
